The Liver Birds

The Liver Birds

Before Elizabeth’s TV debut she appeared in numerous stage plays including When The Reds (1973) and as Alice in the Beatles inspired John, Paul, George, Ringo & Bert in 1974. It was a performance in this that lead to her TV break when Nerys Hughes saw the play and suggested Elizabeth as a possible replacement for Polly James in The Liver Birds.

Elizabeth Estensen television debut was in series five of The Liver Birds in 1975 at the age of 25. Elizabeth was playing Carol Boswell, Sandra's (Nerys Hughes) new flatmate. Elizabeth appeared in five series of the Liver Birds (series five to nine) to the programme's end.

During the late 1970's Elizabeth had other roles such as Children (1976), Within These Walls (1976) and the BBC Play for Today: Our Day Out (1978).

When The Liver Birds ended Elizabeth made appearances in episodes of children's programmes You and Me (1979), The Basil Brush Show (1979) and The Adventure Game (1980).

At the start of the 1980's Elizabeth made appearances in The Cannon & Ball Show (1980), BBC2 Playhouse: Elizabeth Alone (1981) and The Theatre Quiz (1981).

Wendy Wooley in Danger Marmalade At Work

As Wendy Wooley
Danger Marmalade At Work (1984)

Elizabeth Estensen appeared as the dotty Social Worker Wendy Wooley in the Thames Television children’s series Danger Marmalade at Work (1984), the sequel series of Educating Marmalade.

Following her appearance in Danger Marmalade at Work Elizabeth was cast in the new Thames Television children's series Wonders In Letterland (later to be renamed Trouble with T-Bag) in the lead role of T-Bag.

Elizabeth played the role of T-Bag over the course of five series and two Christmas specials and throughout she played Tallulah Bag's myriad of traits by being vain, crazy, idiotic, funny, witty, pompous, subtle, grand, vulnerable, sarcastic, scary, sophisticated, bad-tempered, greedy, mad and a lot more besides. With each series of T-Bag the ratings grew and each year the series was recommissioned by Thames Television.

Sadly after recording of T-Bag and the Revenge of the T. Set (1989), Elizabeth decided to leave the eponymous role and the future of the series was uncertain but due to the high ratings over her five years in the role the series would continue with a new actress in the leading role. The following four series would star the cult actress Georgina Hale as Tallulah’s sister Tabatha Bag.

Elizabeth then appeared in the final series of BBC Comedy Life Without George (1989) as the pregnant Amanda.

Elizabeth then appeared in the BBC Children’s series Happy Families (1989 - 1990) based on the books by Allan Ahlberg as numerous characters but remembered mostly for her portrayal of the bungling baddy Mrs Clara Creep (Mr Creep the Crook‘s Wife).

Elizabeth would continue to appear in a number of other series written by Lee Pressman and Grant Cathro such as Mike & Angelo (1995 - 2000), the children’s sci-fi series Delta Wave (1995) and Polterguests (1999).

Throughout the 1980's and 1990's Elizabeth made several appearances on the stage including Don Juan as Charlotte (7 Apr 1981); Cavalcade as Ellen Bridges (1 May-29 June 1985); Shirley Valentine; The School For Scandal as Mrs Candour (17 Apr-29 Jun 1996); Cardiff East (1997) and Hushabye Mountain as Beryl (3 Feb-15 May 1999).

A Touch Of Frost (1995)

As well as Elizabeth’s many stage and screen roles she has made many guest appearances in highly acclaimed TV series such as Casualty (1993), Cracker (1995), A Touch of Frost (1995), The Upper Hand (1993) and Last Of The Summer Wine (1997).

Alongside many of her comedy and Children's TV roles Elizabeth took roles from TV adaptations of classic novels such as her role of Mrs Coggan in Thomas Hardy's Far From The Madding Crowd (1998).

Elizabeth appeared in the TV pilot It Must Be Love (1996) where she starred alongside former T-Bag co-star Kellie Bright) but this was not commissioned for a series.

In 1996 Elizabeth started her soap career after starring in several episodes between 1996 and 1998 in the ITV soap Coronation Street as Pam Middleton (Mother of hairdresser Fiona Middleton played by Angela Griffin). Following Coronation Street Elizabeth began appearing in ITV soap Emmerdale from 1999 as the Pub Landlady Diane Blackstock.

In both 2001 and 2002 Elizabeth was nominated for the Best Actress award at The British Soap Awards for her performance in Emmerdale but never made the shortlist of four nominees at the award ceremony.

Also in 2002 (11th July) the Queen visited the set of Emmerdale (as part of her Golden Jubilee Tour) to see the village Post Office explode (which was screened later in 2002).

After her character's Diane’s spell in a jail cell (9th July 2003) her character, when offered a brandy, replied with the apt ‘I’d rather have a nice cup of tea’!

2003 would mark the start of a period of Elizabeth looking back on her career for several different programmes. On the 3rd January 2003 Elizabeth appeared on the CiTV Birthday Bash programme to commemorate CiTV’s 20th Birthday to talk about T-Bag. In 2005 Elizabeth would talk about her time on Emmerdale in The Sugden Family Album.

This Morning

This Morning (2006)

In January 2006 Elizabeth's career was chronicled by This Morning in their 'Soap Icons' section which included Elizabeth talking about her career in The Liver Birds, T-Bag, Coronation Street and Emmerdale.

In 2007 Elizabeth attended the T-Bag reunion DVD filming by Fantom Films to talk about her time on the T-Bag series.

Elizabeth looked further back on her career when, in 2008, she was interviewed about The Liver Birds for the BBC programme Comedy Connections.

In 2010 Elizabeth recorded the commentaries for the T-Bag DVDs of Wonders in Letterland and T-Bag Strikes Again, both of which are available to buy now.

Whilst appearing in Emmerdale Elizabeth made several appearances on daytime TV programmes such as This Morning, GMTV and Loose Women to promote current storylines in the soap that she was involved with including Diane's cancer storyline, her marriage to Jack Sugden and the appearance of the singer Tony Christie as an old friend.

In 2009 at The British Soap Awards Elizabeth gave a moving speech in rememberance of her Emmerdale co-star Clive Hornby who played her Husband Jack Sugden who passed away the previous year.

Elizabeth Estensen left Emmerdale after over 20 years making appearances in over 2000 episodes during that time, her last appearance as Diane Sugden was on 29th October 2021.
